How to make a Adhoc wlan connection between your Nokia N95 phone and your Windows PC?
Background: I think ad-hoc connections are cool, but a bit tricky to set up. Anyway, save this doc for the rainy day, when you reall really need the connection, but are out of a router.
Windows XP Laptop, preparations
-------------------------------
Define a Wireless network manually (adhoc):
- Go to Control Panel and open "Network Connections"
- Right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and select "Properties"
- Select "Wireless Networks" Tab
- (You probably need to check the "Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings", but not sure though)
- Click "Add.."
- Type the SSID, e.g. "AD"
- Select "Connect even if this network is not broadcasting"
- Select "Open" for "Network Authentication"
- Select "Disabled" for Data encryption
- Select "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used"
- Click "Ok" and "Continue Anyway"
- Click on the "Advanced" button
- Ensure that "Access point (infrastructure) network only" is NOT selected
- Click "Close"
- Select the "General" tab
- Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click "Properties"
- Note. if you have anything else than: "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" selected at this point, please MAKE AN NOTE OF YOUR SETTINGS.
- Select "Use the following IP address", and..
- Type "192.168.2.1" for "IP address:"
- Type "255.255.255.0" for "Subnet mask"
- Type "192.168.2.2" for "Default gateway"
- Select "Use the following DNS server addresses:"
- Type "192.168.2.2" for "Preferred DNS server" (not sure if this is needed)
- Click "Ok"
- Click "Close"
N95 preparations
-----------------
Define an Access Point, manually.
- Go to Tools / Settings / Connection / Access points
- Select Options / "New access point"
- Type a Connection name, eg. "MyAdhoc"
- Select "Wireless LAN" as the Data bearer
- Select WLAN network name, and "Enter manually", type "AD".
- Select "Public" for Network status
- Select "Ad-hoc" for WLAN network mode
- Select "Open network" as the WLAN security mode
- Skip WLAN security settings
- Select "Advanced settings" from the Options menu
- Select IPv4 settings
- Select Phone IP address
- Type "192.168.2.2", and hit "Ok"
- Select Subnet mask
- Type "255.255.255.0", and hit "Ok"
- Select Default gateway
- Type "192.168.2.1", and hit "Ok"
- Select DNS address (Note. this step might not be necessary)
- Type "192.168.2.1" for Primary DNS address
- Type "192.168.2.1" for Secondary DNS address
- Hit "Ok"
- Hit "Back"
- Hit "Back", "Back" and finally "Exit"
How to Connect?
----------------
Laptop:
- Go to Control Panel / Network Connections / Wireless Network Connection
- Click on "View Wireless Networks"
- Disconnect any existing connection by double clicking on it (select "Ok")
- Double click on "AD" and wait for "Connected"
- Start any IP based server (eg. Opera 10.10)
N95:
- Open the Web Browser
- Select "Go to address" and type eg. "192.168.2.1:8840" - this depends on your server!
- Select "AD" in the Select access point -list. Note. If you don't get this prompt, adjust browser settings to "Always ask"

PLEASE NOTE

Once you're finnished, please remember to revert back to the automatic Wlan settings in you Laptop:
- Go to Control Panel and open "Network Connections"
- Right click on "Wireless Network Connection" and select "Properties"
- Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" and click "Properties"
- Select "Obtain an IP address automatically"
- Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"
- Note. If you had anything else than the "automatic" settings in this dialog, please put back you own settings (Hope you made the notes :)
