Breeding Ethics
After genetics studies and breeding Chihuahuas for several years, I have concluded following guide lines for my breeding:
- There are many things that needs to be thinked over when I plan breeding a new litter. One of the most important things is fitness. Animal spice or a dog breed will not survive if it is not strong, healthy and reproduce easily. With two words – be vital. Chihuahuas also should not be too selective about their environment, which includes the food they eat. Adjustment to the always changing world keeps the breed going.
-I use for breeding as healthy dogs as possible and I also think that the healthy puppies from a healthy mother are nursing themselves and growing normally that way. They don't need to be bottle fed or fed straight to their stomach by syringe. Only the most vital puppies are for breeding purposes. That is how nature makes selection, as a breeder I respect that. Also Chihuahuas are able to have vital puppies. Puppies, who cannot nurse themselves, are not healthy.
-It is possible to have a line with show quality females, who whelp naturally time after time. My best self whelping females have been between 2 - 2,5kg. They just need to have a wide pelvic.
-Chihuahuas used for breeding should look like Chihuahuas. They should have healthy body structure and bright minded head.
Health Checks for My Breeding Stock:
In Finland all Chihuahuas used for breeding must be officially patella checked and check results are public (otherwise puppies are not registered by Finnish Kennel Club). You can find them from Finnish Kennel Clubs' database.
Veterinarian has checked my dogs hearts every time we visit at the clinic, but nowadays I have started to ask also official
heart check ups (check results are also public - You can find them from
Finnish Kennel Clubs' database). From there you can find also official eye check results as well.
