Lieksa - places of interest

Lake Pielinen is the sixth largest lake in Finland. It is a many-faced lake, with miles of beautiful sandy beaches but also barren and rocky stretches of shore.

The Koli Hills and Koli National Park
Koli National Park is located in northern Karelia on the shore of Lake Pielinen in Lieksa. The park's purpose is to protect the national landscape of Koli and old growth forests on the foot hills. As well as to maintain plant communities created by slash-and-burn agriculture.

The Koli Hills are remains of the Karelids that were formed two billion years ago. The breathtaking views that open up from the hills have enchanted people from all around the world. The highest peak of the Koli Hills, Ukko-Koli, rises 347 metres above the sea level. The scenery around Koli is considered to be some of the most beautiful in Finland.

Finnish National Landscape at Koli Hills

The Temple of Silence is located on the Akka-Koli Hill. It is an uncovered natural shrine, where you can compose yourself. There is a wooden cross attached to a boulder and in front of it an altar of stone. Koli National Park was founded in 1991.

Ruunaa Rapids The roaring Ruunaa Rapids of River Lieksanjoki are located close to the eastern border of Finland, in a stretch of the river about 30 km long. The Ruunaa Hiking Area is situated in the easternmost part of Lieksa. The best way to get to know the area is to join a thrilling rapids-shooting tour on a big, wooden boat or an action-packed rafting tour on a rubber raft. Ruunaa also forms a superb national fishing area. There are over 50 km of well-marked hiking trails as well as several lean-to forest shelters, tenting areas and campfire sites.
