This story explains why and how Ben Donker has changed his AX 1.4TRS into a yellow streetracer.

In March 1999 Ben was looking for an AX and found a bordaux red old 1987 AX 1.4 car. Het bought the car and encountered a number of technical shortcomings which had to be repaired.

He also bought a complete second hand AX GT/GTi bodykit and backspoiler from the car dealer. Then the conversion started.

  1. Fixed the malfunctioning brakes, looking out for lowering set.
  2. Bought lowering set and a VICTOR steering wheel (30cm).
  3. Early May the AX was lowered (4.5 cm).

  5. Started to add the AX bodykit. How? with glue, original fixings or via nails? The nails where choosen. A lot has to be cut from the back sides.
  6. May 1999, the car was looking strange, bordaux red with a white body kit and a big hole in the backbumper for the own-created exhaust pipe (Peugeot 405 Mi16 mid-exhaust chamber with 90mm end.)

  8. While installing the audio system speaker wires, Ben detected a corrosion hole in the bottom which had to be fixed by welding.
  9. Mid June Ben thought about converting the car into a rallycar.
  10. The car was stripped totally and received the black interior from a scrapped 1989 AX Mistral including the carpet and dashboard.

  12. Received a Demon Tweeks car rally/race catalog and ordered white flashing lights to replace the orange ones, aluminium pedal set, rally/race bonnet fixes, a 4-2-1 spaghetti exhaust pipe made by Janspeed (125 UK Pound).
  13. Applied a selfcreated rollcage and applied 3-point harness.
  14. Applied aluminium door-inner shields and an extra stabilizer bar beneath the front wheels. Also a strut stabilizer added.
  15. Replaced the single carburettor by a GT double-carburettor from a scrapped AX GT.
  16. Red KONI shockabsorbers mounted and 4 new brakes.
  17. The wheels have been made 1 inch wider by a special company (gebr DePijper, Hellevoetsluis) and mounted new 185-60-13 tires.
  18. The ordered parts from Demon Tweeks arrived and were mounted.
  19. Received the 2 ordered 2nd hand AX GTi chairs from Bart Ebben and placed them into the AX.
  20. Mid July, a nice exhaustpipe was found (Peco DTM with 2 x 76mm pipes (originally ment for Opel Kadett GSi). It was placed in the center of the bottom. The forward part of the exhaustpipe was replaced by an AX SPORT pipe since it fitted better to the spaghetti.
  21. Because of the exhaustchange, the backbumper was replaced and also found a AX GT frontbumper with the foglights.

  23. At this address Ben also found a Peugeot 205 Rallye 1299cc engine but decided not to buy it. (Same engine as the AX SPORT).
  24. Lined up the AX and mounted new steeringwheel knobs.
  25. Created an air-inlet on the bonnet.
  26. Late September Ben wanted more power, and studied the subject until late October 1999. He decided to keep carburettor and to reject the use of injection.
  27. Found another Peugeot Rallye engine including the 4 weber carburettors etc and bought it.
  28. Replaced the engine and also mounted a bigger Peugeot 309 diesel radiator for better cooling capacity.

  30. Added extra fuel-lines made from 8mm copper and placed an oil cooler from a Toyota Carina.
  31. Because of all the changes there was no room anymore for the accu and it had to be moved to behind the seats.

  33. Engine runs fine but uses far to much oil (l liter per 500km).
  34. November 1999, all cilinder springs replaced and also all valve shields. Valves set and replaced distribution.
  35. Oil usage is now back to normal.
  36. After a cold winter in Februar Ben continued the project.
  37. Bought 2 COBRA Clubman sport seats with Biesheuvel Autosport.

  39. Bought and mounted a Subaru Impreza WRC airinlet on the bonnet and also some stainless steel brakelines.

  41. Removed doorlocks (outside) and made the car paint-ready.
  42. The car was painted yellow completely and bodykit became black.
  43. Driven the car back home without windows, lights etc and it was slightly raining!!
  44. Start building up the car late March 2000.

  46. Created some subframes for the Cobra seats to have the seats as low as possible and because the originals are expensive.
  47. Orderer double headlights to replace the original ones.
  48. Mounted 4 Hella foglights on the nose (type Comet 500) and ordered new bigger (10mm) brake discs. The old ones (8mm) have become blue!!

  50. New discs mounted (ATE AX SPORT discs with cut profiles).
  51. April 2000. Car is almost ready. Nice wheels are missing.

  53. Bought and mounted 14 inch 6J AEZ wheels (ECCO-7) and used new Dunlop SP SPORT 2000 185-50-14 tires.
  54. May 2000. First appearance inside a Citroen environment by visiting the CitroMobile 2000 event.
