Old Karkkila

The rapids of the river KARJAA attracted  ironworks industry to set foot in Karkkila in the early 19th century. Today, the factory buildings have been taken into new use by new industries, private companies and the town hall, to name a few. The old masonry halls also frequently display art exhibitions and other cultural events.

Many houses like ours date back close to 100 years and were originally built and owned by the Högfors factory to house the families of the factory employees. Now most are owned by private families and have been restored accordingly. In the proximity of our home you will find e.g.

- the Fagerkulla workers' museum with houses restored in their original outlooks from late 1800's to 1960's,

- the blast furnace museum "Masuuni" together with the Foundry museum and Gallery Bremer,

- the lake Pyhäjärvi with a small beach and clean water for swimming

- forests with trails, small forest lakes and plenty of berries and mushrooms free to enjoy!

- friendly small town shops and services and the lively market place once or in the summer time twice a week

- frequent bus services e.g to Helsinki and the Helsinki-Vantaa airport  (1 hr)

The area is also great for fly-fishing (with permit), horseback riding (several stalls in Karkkila) or canoeing at the nearby Vähävesi Canoe Farm. You will find a tennis court at a 300 m walking distance and the Vihti golf centre at 15 km.

Many interesting spots are within 1 to 2 hours reach by car from us: Helsinki, Turku, Tampere, the old fashioned spa resort Hanko etc.

History, nature and the relaxed atmosphere of a small country town  brought us from Helsinki to Karkkila in 1999. We trust that our guests will enjoy the same combination during their stay!
